In a time of war, terrible injustice, and false leaders, how should the writer and/or Jew act (“…car le judaïsme et l’écriture ne sont qu’une même attente, un même espoir, une même usure,” Jabès)? A contemporary writer might turn to Abraham Abulafia, the late 13th century Kabbalist for a possible response. Abulafia developed a speculative system with the goal of attaining the World to Come, and a technique involving the permutation of the letters of the alphabet (tzeruf). Abulafia offers a rabbinical vision of language as a continual exercise of metonymical displacement. The disruption of the codes of grammar and language served not only the task of creation (a by-product of Kabbalist meditation is the simulacra of life referred to as golem) which has already been compared to the artistic act. However, I want to suggest it can also serve to undo the golem gone mad — a soulless being wreaking havoc, a socially constructed self subjugated to the norms and prejudices of its society, or even a murderous, war mongering, false president.
